Practice Areas

At Cooper Lord Law, we provide the following legal services.

Drug Offences

Under the CDSA, controlled substances are categorized into different schedules based on their potential for abuse, medical use, and public health implications. The schedules range from Schedule I (the most strictly controlled substances) to Schedule V (substances with the lowest potential for abuse). Penalties for drug offences can range from fines and probation to lengthy imprisonment, depending on the seriousness of the offence and the offender’s criminal history. In some cases, individuals charged with drug offences may be eligible for alternative sentencing or diversion programs, especially for first-time offenders or those struggling with substance abuse issues. Drug Treatment Court can also be an option for offenders who are interested in a long-term rehabilitative solution.

It is essential to seek legal counsel from a qualified criminal defence lawyer if you or someone you know is facing drug offence charges. The lawyers at Cooper Lord Law can provide guidance, protect your rights, and work toward the best possible outcome for your case.

Driving

Driving is an important privilege in Canada. Failing to follow the rules of the road can result in traffic tickets. But there are also many criminal offences in Canada that relate to the operation of motor vehicles. These offences can result in criminal charges and penalties, including fines, probation, imprisonment, and the suspension or revocation of a driver’s license.

Penalties for criminal driving offences can vary depending on the specific circumstances, prior convictions, and the seriousness of the offence charged. It’s important to note that provincial and territorial traffic laws also exist, and they may impose additional sanctions, such as fines and license suspensions, for certain driving infractions. If you have been charged with a criminal driving offence in Canada, seeking the assistance of an experienced criminal defence lawyer is essential to protect your rights and navigate the legal process effectively. Let the lawyers at Cooper Lord Law help to defend you.

Violent Offences

In Canada, violent offences refer to criminal acts that involve the use or threat of physical force against another person, resulting in harm, injury, or fear for one’s safety. These offences are treated seriously under the Criminal Code of Canada and can lead to severe legal consequences. Violent offences can carry significant penalties, including lengthy imprisonment, fines, and a lasting criminal record. The severity of the charges and potential sentences depends on the specific offence, the degree of harm caused, and other aggravating factors.

If you are charged with committing a violent offence, seeking the guidance of an experienced criminal defence lawyer at Cooper Lord Law is crucial to protect your rights and receive fair treatment under the law.

Charter of Rights and Freedoms

The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms grants everyone in Canada basic protections while they engage with the legal system and its players. The rights relevant to criminal charges are generally contained in sections 7 to 14 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and encompass various legal rights that are fundamental to the protection of individuals in Canada. These sections play a crucial role in upholding the principles of justice, fairness, and protection of individuals’ rights under the Canadian legal system. They provide an avenue for individuals to seek remedies when their rights are violated and contribute to ensuring a just and equitable legal process.

If you think your legal rights have been violated during an interaction with police or the courts, call an experienced criminal defence lawyer at Cooper Lord Law today to discuss your options.

Youth Criminal Justice

Youth in Canada are defined as anyone between 12 and 17 years of age. Youth, or “Young Persons” as Courts sometimes call them, are bound by the Criminal Code of Canada like everyone else in Canada. However, the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA) affords certain benefits to youth being prosecuted for alleged offences. For instance, Youth benefit from having their identities protected while they are being prosecuted for alleged offences.

Despite the identity and record protections afforded to youth in Canada, being charged with a criminal offence as a youth is serious and can have a long-lasting impact on the accused person’s life. If you or a loved one is a young person charged with an offence, contact a criminal defence lawyer at Cooper Lord Law.

Sexual Offences

The Criminal Code of Canada outlines various sexual offences and provides definitions and penalties for these offences. Penalties for these offences can vary depending on the circumstances and severity of the crime, and they may include imprisonment, probation, registration as a sex offender, and more.

If you have been charged with a sexual offence in Canada, seeking the assistance of an experienced criminal defence lawyer is essential to protect your rights and navigate the legal process effectively. Let the lawyers at Cooper Lord Law help to defend you.

Weapons and Firearms Offences

Firearms, crossbows, blades and bats are often synonymous with sport and leisure. But when used improperly, criminal charges could be the result. Firearms laws in Canada are stringent, and there are different categories of firearms, including prohibited, restricted, and non-restricted. The possession, use, and transportation of firearms are subject to strict regulations, and individuals must hold the appropriate licenses and registrations.

If you are facing charges related to weapons and firearms offences in Canada, seeking the assistance of an experienced criminal defence lawyer is essential to protect your rights and navigate the legal process effectively. Let the lawyers at Cooper Lord Law help to defend your charges.
